Norwegian and Swedish retained the meaning “morning meal”, while Danish developed from “morning meal” through “second breakfast” and an intermediate meal to its modern meaning “lunch”.\nCompare Norwegian Nynorsk frukost, Swedish frukost (“breakfast”) and Danish frokost (“lunch”), as well as Latvian brokastis (“breakfast”), likewise borrowed from Middle Low German. The first element is cognate with German früh and Dutch vroeg (“early”).",

In Norwegian–Danish, the word was introduced through Hanseatic Low German influence during the 16th century. Norwegian and Swedish retained the meaning “morning meal”, while Danish developed from “morning meal” through “second breakfast” and an intermediate meal to its modern meaning “lunch”.\nCompare Norwegian Nynorsk frukost, Swedish frukost (“breakfast”) and Danish frokost (“lunch”), as well as Latvian brokastis (“breakfast”), likewise borrowed from Middle Low German. The first element is cognate with German früh and Dutch vroeg (“early”).",
